SOMATIC EXPERIENCING®

Somatic Experiencing is a body-oriented approach to healing. I am trained in a particular method called Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) created by Dr. Peter Levine. SE™ works at the level of the nervous system to track bodily sensations and movements to shift patterns of chronic stress and trauma that leave us feeling scared, stuck, shut down, overwhelmed, or disconnected. SE is used to treat two types of trauma: shock trauma and developmental trauma. Shock trauma is caused by a single traumatic event or near-death experience. Developmental trauma refers to the damage that occurs during childhood development.

A Somatic Experiencing Practitioner“SEP” is a practitioner who has completed 3 years of training and can practice without oversight.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress. It is an effective treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). During EMDR therapy sessions, you relive negative or triggering experiences in brief doses while the therapist directs your eye movements.

EMDR is thought to be effective because recalling distressing events is often less emotionally upsetting when your attention is diverted. This allows you to be exposed to the memories or thoughts without having a strong psychological response. Over time, this technique is believed to lessen the impact that the memories or thoughts have on you.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is an advanced brain-body therapy that focuses on identifying, processing. and releasing trauma and emotional stress. It is based on the premise that “where you look affects how you feel” and finds that eye positions correlate with unconscious, emotional experiences. By doing this, Brainspotting reaches parts of the brain that cannot typically be accessed through talk therapy.

Brainspotting has roots in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and supports the reprocessing of negative experiences and retrains emotional reactions. I tend to use Brainspotting in my practice in conjunction with other therapies and have found the method to be highly effective toward healing.
